Government Branches: Nevada has three branches: the Executive (Governor), Legislative (21 Senators and 42 Assembly members), and Judicial.
District Representation: Each Senate seat covers two Assembly seats. In our district, these are Assembly District 1 (Republican Candidate Garland Brinkley) and Assembly District 17 (Republican Candidate Robert Olson).
Terms: State Senators serve for four years; Assembly members serve for two years.
Powers: The Legislature meets for four months every other year, but it has a lot of power. It passes bills, which the Governor can sign into law or veto. If vetoed, the Legislature can override the veto if one party has a supermajority.
Impact: The Legislature affects many parts of our lives, like education, business rules, elections, DMV, licensing, insurance, gas prices, transportation, healthcare, and public safety.
